1. U.S. Open Cups History:
The Galaxy have a rich history in the U.S. Open Cup. They have won the tournament twice back in 2001 and in 2005. They also runner-ups for the Lamar Hunt Trophy twice as they played in the final in 2002 and 2006.
The Portland Timbers have never won’t he U.S. Open Cup let alone make it to a final. They do not have a great history of success in the tournament but they are the defending MLS Cup champions. They have had their fair share of recent success.
2. Last Match:
In the last match between the two clubs, they drew at the StubHub Center 1-1. That was an intense match that saw Nigel de Jong commit a hard foul on Portland’s Darlington Nagbe. He suffered a nasty looking ankle injury that forced him to be helped off of the field.
There may be some bad blood between the two sides since that play in their last game. There should not be any dirty plays on either side but anything can happen in the heat of the moment. The LA Galaxy were reduced to 10-men in their last U.S. Open Cup match after a player received a straight red.
