Angel City FC Falls Again Over the Weekend

Even after extending Gisele Thompson, Angel City FC couldn't win on Saturday against the North Carolina Courage.

Angel City FC are hoping to sneak into the National Women's Soccer League playoff picture. However, their recent loss on Saturday did not help their efforts.

In a 2-1 loss, Angel City was not able to improve their position in the standing, as their opponent, the North Carolina Courage did.

How did the game end between Angel City FC and the North Carolina Courage?

Manaka Matsukubo and Brianna Pinto scored in the game's first 20 minutes for the Courage. Angel City had to play down, 2-0, for the majority of the game. That was until Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir answered the call for FC.

The Icelandic soccer player put Angel City on the board late in the second half. Her goal in the 88th minute cut the deficit in half, but it was too much for Jónsdóttir's team to overcome.

Angel City FC's Sveindís Jane Jónsdóttir scored her first-ever NWSL goals on Saturday. That wasn't enough, as FC lost 2-1.

North Carolina was just more efficient on offense than Angel City at First Horizon Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park. FC is now three points behind eighth-place Racing Louisville FC. The Courage and the Houston Dash separate Angel City from the last playoff spot.

Even after locking up Gisele Thompson to a long-term contract, Angel City FC couldn't build any momentum against a fellow playoff hopeful team like North Carolina. There's still a chance that Jónsdóttir and Thompson see their team make the postseason in 2025.

What's next for Angel City FC?

Their next opponent is even tougher than the Courage. Angel City hosts the Washington Spirit at BMO Stadium on Thursday, September 18. Back on in May, FC beat the Spirit 4-3 on the road.

Thus, there is the possibility that Angel City wins again when they face the second-best team in the NWSL. However, offense has been an issue for FC all season. They have yet to score more than three goals since the victory over Washington four months ago.

Angel City will also close out the season with five more games after they play the Spirit. FC is at BMO Stadium, where three of those five games will be played, and all of which will be played in the month of October.
