Bruce Arena’s Los Angeles Galaxy may not get the services of Frank Lampard after all. The Independent has reported that Chelsea are going to give Lampard a new contract with the Blues after a deal to join the Galaxy fell apart. And the reason that fell apart is because Tim Leiweke became the President and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.
MLS fans are probably going to say farewell to the days of futility for Toronto FC, while as for long-suffering Maple Leafs fans, the drought may not drag on much longer. In addition, with ESPN reporting that Phil Jackson is being pursued to join the Toronto Raptors, all of the star power that Los Angeles has now may be moving north by northeast to Canada.
“If you look at the run we had [with AEG], what made the Staples Center phenomenal was the content,” Leiweke told Steve Bottjer of MLSSoccer.com. “You had the Lakers winning six championships during that time. You go open up the Home Depot Center and the Galaxy have won four championships and you convince David Beckham to come over. And then the Kings win the Stanley Cup.
“It makes you look a lot brighter and it makes the building look a lot better when you are hanging those kinds of banners. If there is something out there that means that we can make [Toronto FC] better and find a personality that we ultimately ingrain within that football club, we’ll do it. If we don’t do it this summer we will work on doing it at year’s end.”
So long and thanks for all the fish, Tim. Meanwhile, former Columbus Crew standout Robbie Rogers has been seen training with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
“He looked a lot sharper than I thought he would today,” said Arena to LAGalaxy.com’s Larry Morgan. “Given the fact he’s been away from the game for a while. The timing I guess is good. I think our league is a progressive league.
“Our league is a league comprised of all different races, colors and creeds, and to be accepting of a gay athlete I don’t think is anything that’s difficult for our league. We’ve had a great mentality of being open and tolerant of all different kinds of people, views, what have you. We’ve known Robbie a bunch of years and he’s a first-class person and we’re only too excited to have him here with us.”
On the Reserve League end, backup goalkeeper Brian Perk has been on the comeback trail and was on showcase in their 1-0 defeat to Real Salt Lake. Perk is recovering from sports hernia surgery.
“I felt really healthy and that’s the most important thing. I was getting a feel for all the movements in the game, we played a really good opponent, who took it to us, so it was good,” Perk told LAGalaxy.com’s Adam Serrano. “I feel close [to 100 percent], in the 90’s, 95-ish (percent), just the little things that I’m still improving. There are certain things where I feel a lot better, in lateral movements and other things that I’ve been working on in physical therapy.”
