Los Angeles Galaxy Ins and Outs: February 27, 2013

Bruce Arena’s Los Angeles Galaxy believe that in order to defend a league championship, a capable team must pick up from where they left off. With just about all the preseason matches in Southern California, Los Angeles dropped one match, drew another and won the rest.

“I think that we’ve had some kind of continuity in training. Last year, with the trip to Tucson, we never got in any kind of rhythm and I think this year, we’ve established a rhythm in our training and the build up with the way that we’ve pieced our games together,” said Arena to LAGalaxy.com’s Adam Serrano. “We could slowly build guys in with their minutes and their play and with different guys covering different positions; it’s been a lot easier this year being at home and being able to do that.

“Maybe next year, it’ll be something different. But we just felt with the overload that we had the last three or four years that we needed to be settled a little bit in preseason and that’s why we did this.”

Meanwhile, the USA Under-20 Men’s National Team is heading to the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Turkey. Galaxy midfielder Jose Villareal scored a brace in the 40th and 54th minutes of play to give the States a 4-2 victory over Canada in the CONCACAF Under-20 Quarterfinals in Puebla, Mexico.

“I’m just happy to be able to help out my team however possible,” Villareal told MLSSoccer.com’s Tom Marshall. “If they need me to score, I’ll score, if they need me to defend, I’ll defend. We work as a unit so I’m proud.

“We kind of knew that we had a lot more to show, to the crowd and all you guys so it was good we got the four goals and it’s good momentum for the team.”
