LA Galaxy Draw Against San Jose After Allowing a Late Equalizing Goal

The LA Galaxy were forced to settle for a draw, 1-1, against the San Jose Earthquakes in the California Clasico as they broke their scoreless streak but allowed another late goal.

The final installment of the California Clasico for this MLS season had plenty of excitement but ultimately ended in disappointment for the LA Galaxy. They had been shutout in their three previous matches but were able to find a goal in this one. They also allowed yet another late goal to settle for a draw.

This match saw the return of Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard to the Starting XI but neither were able to end the match on the pitch. Star power was missing as Gyasi Zardes, Robbie Keane, and Chris Wondolowski were all participating in international tournaments. Check out the full stats for the game here.

First Half:

The first half started off poorly for San Jose as their captain, Victor Bernardez, picked up a lower leg injury and was forced off in the ninth minute. Brian Rowe played great in goal for LA and he made a great save in the 11th minute when he came far off of his line. Chadd Barrett of San Jose almost scored near the end of the first half (45th minute) when his shot hit the top of the bar and stayed in play.

Second Half:

The match really opened up in the second half with both teams getting plenty of chances. Giovani dos Santos’ cross found Steven Gerrard but his head was just wide of the post. Gerrard was close again in the 56th minute when his shot hit the left post and barely managed to stay out.

LA completed some great build up play in the 60th minute but Steven’s point-blank shot was saved by the San Jose keeper. The lone Galaxy goal in the match came in the 69th minute when Gerrard’s perfectly place cross found Gio who placed his header past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

That goal ended a 371 minute scoreless streak for the Galaxy. It was also dos Santos’ seventh goal on the MLS season which leads the team. LA then decided to park the bus and San Jose attacked them relentlessly until the final minute. Rowe made some big saves and Barrett’s shot in the 80th minute hit the top of the post and stayed out.

The Earthquakes were able to find an equalizer in the 90th minute when Shea Salinas took a free kick that Chad Barrett banged home with a header. The match was crazy from there on out as both sides had chances to find a winner and Ashley Cole was ejected late in the game.

This was a bounce back game for the LA Galaxy and huge win in the California Clasico. The team was able to break out of their scoring slump and they played their best all-around game since their win over New England in May. They will next play against the Portland Timbers on June 29th in the U.S. Open Cup.
