Real Salt Lake vs. Los Angeles Galaxy: Live Blog

Bruce Arena’s Los Angeles Galaxy continue their 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs campaign today when they travel to Rio Tinto Stadium to face Jason Kreis’s Real Salt Lake in the second leg of the 2013 MLS Western Conference Semifinals.

The Galaxy currently lead the series on a 1-0 margin and only need a draw to advance to the next round of the playoffs. Real Salt Lake will need to win by two goals to claim the series outright, while a one-goal win will force extra time.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET and will be televised by ESPN and ESPN Deportes. The Live Blog begins at approximately 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET. Keep it right here on the View from Avalon for continuing coverage of the 2013 Los Angeles Galaxy season and all things Major League Soccer.

T-120: Welcome to the Live Blog between Real Salt Lake and the Los Angeles Galaxy from Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. This is the second leg of the 2013 MLS Western Conference Semifinals. I’m Jo-Ryan Salazar, the Editor of the View from Avalon on the FanSided Network. Glad to have you on board.

So, here we are. A major “Win or Go Home” message for either team. The Los Angeles Galaxy hold a 1-0 advantage, but it could have been a lot more if the finishing was there in the first leg at StubHub Center. Unfortunately, it was not to be, and Galaxy fans will be holding their breath for the next 90 minutes. As for Real Salt Lake, a two-goal victory will be enough. A one-goal victory will force extra time and penalties if necessary. Anything less than that and their season is a wrap. Can RSL home-cook the visitors and move on to the Western Conference Final?

We have some other scores and action to tell you, including some late show action in Harrison, N.J. and Kansas City, Kan. Kickoff for this match is in less than two hours and will be televised by ESPN.

T-115: In the first Eastern Conference Semifinal, Bradley Wright-Phillips gave Mike Petke’s New York Red Bulls an early 3-2 lead on aggregate, but an equalizer from Brad Davis in the 36th minute combined with a clutch 104th-minute tap-in from Omar Cummings gave Dominic Kinnear’s Houston Dynamo a 4-3 victory on aggregate at Red Bull Arena.

T-110: In the second Eastern Conference Semifinal, goals from Aurelien Collin (41′), Seth Sinovic (79′) and Claudio Bieler (113′) offset a 70th-minute strike from Dimitry Imbongo Boele in the 70th minute to give Peter Vermes’s Sporting Kansas City a 4-3 victory over the New England Revolution on aggregate.

Depending on what happens in the Conference Finals, Sporting could see MLS Cup 2013 take place at their own backyard. They are a team that controls their own fate at the moment.

T-105: The preview from MLSSoccer.com…

Thu., Nov. 7, Rio Tinto Stadium (7 p.m. MT; ESPN; TSN2)

The Western Conference Semifinal Series between Real Salt Lake and the LA Galaxy sits on a knife edge as the teams play the second leg on Thursday evening at Rio Tinto Stadium. A Sean Franklin goal was the only tally as the Galaxy opened defense of their back-to-back MLS Cup triumph with a win in the first leg at StubHub Center. Real return home needing to end a five-game winless streak in the MLS Cup Playoffs – and end a postseason goalless streak now at more than five hours.

T-95: Three Points from Adam Serrano…

A one-goal deficit is not insurmountable for Real Salt Lake, but with the home crowd at Rio Tinto Stadium behind them, RSL are expected to be highly active from the get-go as they look to pin the LA Galaxy in their own defensive third.

Real Salt Lake may be expected to dictate the pace of the second leg against the LA Galaxy, but the two-time defending MLS Cup champions’ ability to hit back in transition will serve as their greatest weapon on Thursday.

MATCHUP TO WATCH: Alvaro Saborío vs. Omar Gonzalez

It doesn’t get any better than this, the battle of the two twin towers could decide which team gets a berth in the Western Conference Championship.

T-90: We are 90 minutes away from kickoff at Rio Tinto. Odds from oddschecker…

Real Salt Lake 9/5
Draw 12/5
Los Angeles Galaxy 15/8

T-80: “It’s 1-0 for us, we know we have to go in there and put in a solid effort,” defender Omar Gonzalez said to LAGalaxy.com’s Larry Morgan this week. “If we show up the right way with the right mentality and execute our game plan there’s a good chance of us getting out of there with a point or three.

“We’re good with the situation and want to get there and make it a great situation.”

T-60: We are an hour away from kickoff here at the RioT. If you want to sound off your thoughts on the game, post away in the comments section below. This is the Live Blog between Real Salt Lake and the Los Angeles Galaxy on The View from Avalon, part of the FanSided Network.

T-30: Regardless of the outcome tonight, the coverage of the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs will continue, with previews and recaps of the first and second legs of the Conference Finals, followed by coverage of MLS Cup 2013. So even if the Galaxy do get eliminated tonight—heaven forbid they do—the show goes on until the MLS Cup Final is history. How about that. Look forward to the coverage on the View.

T-13: Now, from RSL’s twitter feed…

#RSL BENCH: 1) Attinella 2) Mansally 3) Grossman 4) Stephenson 5) Garcia 6) Plata 7) Sandoval

T-10: I’ll be honest with you, if there was one team worthy of ending this dynasty bid from LA, it’s Real Salt Lake. Don’t let their futile record in big matches at Rio Tinto Stadium fool you. They are a team that are capable of breaking through on their night. From a fan’s perspective, this is going to hurt, but it’s something that I would be able to manage as a columnist here on FanSided.

T-0: Kickoff is moments away at Rio Tinto Stadium!

1′ – The first half begins. Can Real Salt Lake homecook their way to the Conference Finals? Or will the Galaxy play like…the Galaxy?

2′ – Jaime Penedo plays it forward, and RSL look to press early for the series equalizer. Real Salt Lake are not going to experiment; they’re going with the tried-and-true 4-4-2 Diamond. Tony Beltran now. Gyasi Zardes gets challenged.

3′ – Kyle Beckerman plays it back. The backline are slowing it down before a through ball misses Javier Morales.

4′ – A bad first shot from Landon Donovan. He tried to bend one into the top right corner. Alvaro Saborio now. Penedo with the save on Beckerman.

5′ – Tony Beltran again. He wins a throw for RSL.

6′ – Bad pass intended for Zardes. The hosts are doing a solid job closing space.

7′ – Robbie Keane didn’t fare well with that first shot. The other Robbie, Rogers that is, had a good idea.

8′ – Robbie Findley nearly got a good pass to Sabo there. Three Robbies in this game. He was a hero in the 2009 MLS Cup Final in Seattle.

9′ – Sebastian Velasquez will be called for the handball there. Juninho could take this free kick, or Marcelo Sarvas. Too high, but it did have a bend.

10′ – Jaime Penedo denies Findley there.

11′ – Javier Morales will take this corner in the 11th minute. And that nearly was the goal RSL needed. Findley and Saborio make a meal of that.

12′ – The Galaxy are having a bit of stage fright at this juncture. May come back to haunt them. Composure, composure.

13′ – Donovan now. Velasquez with the clearance.

14′ – A bad shot from Marcelo Sarvas. The road has not been kind to the Galaxy. Only four road victories this year. There is a chance that this will pile up tonight.

15′ – Poor free kick from LA. Beckerman again tests Penedo.

16′ – So this will be a corner for Landon Donovan. Will he find Omar Gonzalez here?

17′ – Nope, nope, nope. Donovan misses everybody. Goal kick for Nick Rimando. Saborio offsides. And a poor restart from LA.

18′ – This is turning into a comedy of errors and another goalkeeping clinic. Still early in this proverbial third quarter. Bruce Arena right now is putting himself in a bad situation here.

19′ – Everybody is getting involved. It’s the playoffs, ladies and gentlemen!

20′ – And Luis Gil with a chance. Corner for Morales.

21′ – Nat Borchers’s chance goes to Penedo. So now here is a throw-in for Beltran, he’ll look for someone. What a ball possession battle we got going on.

22′ – Velasquez takes that. Real Salt Lake, all in one rhythm in this 4-4-2 Diamond.

23′ – Omar Gonzalez is going to let that be a throw because he was out of space.

24′ – Gyasi Zardes hasn’t been impressing me tonight. Beltran has been schooling him at Rio Tinto. I wonder how that will impact his rating.

25′ – Robbie Rogers misses wide left. The counter nearly paid off, and someone else needed to clean up there.

26′ – Findley is helped back up to his by Donovan, always a sportsman. Back come the hosts. Morales plays it back. Rimando now.

27′ – Marcelo Sarvas and Juninho have been efficient in the midfield, as always, but they need to keep going after this Real Salt Lake outfit.

28′ – Another miss by Robbie Rogers. I think I’m going to expect from this point forward those misses.

29′ – Todd Dunivant with the clearance. He concedes a corner. Morales now. Zardes on the counter, but Nick Rimando sweeps.

30′ – Kyle Beckerman now, from Chris Wingert. And Gil can’t reel that it. It’s a goal kick to Penedo.

31′ – Nat Borchers will watch that go out for a goal kick to Nick Rimando.

32′ – Jason Kreis looks on, his patience seeming to be wearing thin. Zardes gets shaken up. Another bad shot from Rogers, as always.

33′ – Morales will win the throw. And Findley gets a talking to from Baldomero Toledo. Just bowled Sarvas over.

34′ – Rimando plays it forward. End-to-end action.

35′ – GOAL! Real Salt Lake 26 Sebastian Velazquez

Well, I can tell you that I saw that one coming. Kofi Opare, hang your head in shame.

36′ – It’s all square at Rio Tinto Stadium in this home-and-home. A well-deserved goal for Velasquez.

37′ – Opare will need to make up for that in a big way, or he’ll be the goat for this match.

38′ – Here comes RSL again, but that through ball is blocked.

39′ – Nick Rimando stretches to reset. And this will be a corner for the Galaxy.

40′ – Rimando with the save, but he concedes another corner, this time on the other side.

41′ – And another corner. LA are piling on the set pieces. Clever by Rimando to tell Robbie Findley to clear.

42′ – One more corner for LA. Won by Rogers. Real Salt Lake’s set piece defending is top notch, and Gyasi Zardes makes a meal of that.

43′ – A player is shaken down, it’s Morales. He does get up, though.

44′ – Zardes is double-marked, but he wins another corner.

45′ – Cleared.  And no one was there with the long ball from Todd Dunivant. Keane is not impressed.

45′ + 1′ – One minute of stoppage time. Findley thought he was held, but no call. Halftime.

It now comes down to this: the second half. The team that passes better, defends better and finishes better is moving on. Period. No exceptions, no excuses. Let’s see who does the work this time.

46′ – The second half begins. Will we see this go to extra time? Or will we get a winner in regulation? Refresh to find out!

47′ – RSL are now in uncharted territory: leading an elimination game. Rimando collects that chip-in attempt. Findley shaken up after colliding with Opare.

48′ – The winds are strong at Rio Tinto. Oh, those conditions. Goal kick, Jaime Penedo.

49′ – Hosts win a restart after that duel. Keane has been shutdown by the backline of Real Salt Lake tonight.

50′ – If form follows, it will be a Portland-Real Salt Lake Conference Final, which will be quite exciting to check out.

51′ – Corner for LA. Zardes got closed down there, and so did Omar Gonzalez.

52′ – Morales fouls Rogers there. Real Salt Lake, back on the attack.

53′ – Zardes concedes a free kick, according to Baldomero Toledo. Saved by Penedo.

54′ – Corner is cleared, but not the danger…Findley misses the overhit through ball. Mother Nature: RSL’s 12th man.

55′ – What a ball possession battle between Juninho and Kyle Beckerman.

56′ – Here’s Robbie Findley. Now it’s Velazquez. Offsides, Findley. Sean Franklin to play it forward.

57′ – Here’s Robbie Keane. Good defending from Beckerman. Two champion footballers going at it tonight.

58′ – Franklin. Zardes, and the long delivery. RSL closing down once again.

59′ – Donovan with a bad shot on goal. Back to Penedo.

60′ – These are some massive adjustments here from Real Salt Lake tonight. The 4-4-2 Diamond has been very effective at neutralizing the likes of Robbie Rogers.

61′ – Velasquez takes offense to the ball being out off his touch.

62′ – Another corner for Los Angeles.

63′ – Punched away by Rimando and cleared by Chris Schuler. First time I called his name tonight.

64′ – A cross from Robbie Findley is cleared by Gonzalez, and the Galaxy are making some very speculative clearances. Doesn’t seem to me that either team wants to win this in regulation.

65′ – A swirling set of winds push that ball from Penedo. And a wasted opportunity for LA. Opare with the clearance on the transition!

66′ – The corner from RSL gets cleared.

67′ – A bad shot from Tony Beltran. Goal kick, Jaime Penedo. Overhit ball from Landon Donovan for Keane.

68′ – Side netting for Robbie Rogers, who has had a terrible night at the office.

69′ – Rogers again. And no one to receive the pass from him.

Yellow card 15 Alvaro Saborio
Real Salt Lake

70′ – That’s an easy call right there for Toledo. Studs-up challenge. And I am not sure about what Opare was trying to do there. Bad clearance.

71′ – Corner is cleared, and I think this Galaxy team is missing a set piece mastermind a la David Beckham.

72′ – Findley is denied by Penedo.

73′ – Here’s Sarvas. Zardes. Cleared.

74′ – The action is fast and fluid, like Windows 8. And Velasquez nearly got his brace. It’s a corner. Morales time. Off the bar and out. This place was about to blow the roof off itself.

75′ – A.J. DeLaGarza has come in for Robbie Rogers.

76′ – Also coming in for RSL is Olmes Garcia.

77′ – Velasquez now. He plays it back. Real Salt Lake are taking their time a bit.

78′ – Alvaro Saborio, off the post. Wow.

79′ – Luis Gil on the offensive. This is exciting, playoffs-style football from both teams.

80′ – Penedo with the clearance. DeLaGarza has been thrown into the fire tonight, and I am not sure he’s coping well with the pace.

81′ – Saborio is wondering, “When are we finally going to break through in this part of the aggregate?”

82′ – Penedo with another collection. The home faithful are keeping the faith. Offsides, Morales.

83′ – Gonzalez with the restart. Zardes with another awful ball.

84′ – Set piece now for Real Salt Lake, conceded by Marcelo Sarvas.

85′ – A goal for Morales is disallowed due to an infraction in the box. Kreis applauds sarcastically.

86′ – What drama we have here late at Rio Tinto, and personally, I don’t care how this ends, I want this to have a conclusion, this has been great.

87′ – I think, personally, Toledo got that wrong. Real Salt Lake should be in the driver’s seat right now.

88′ – Real Salt Lake, however, have time to rectify that shortcoming. Here they come. A corner for Morales.

89′ – Penedo with the punch. We’re looking at extra time to settle this.

90′ – A cross from DeLaGarza is collected by Nick Rimando. He hasn’t had to do much this half, which is good for Real Salt Lake. Another save for Penedo.

90′ + 1′ – We have three minutes of stoppage time.

90′ + 2′ – No penalty there for Robbie Keane. Chris Wingert does work. Velasquez has cramped.

90′ + 3′ – Khari Stephenson is coming in for Velasquez.

90′ + 4′ – A throw-in for Los Angeles. They’l just play for extra time.

90′ + 5′ – Rimando hoofs it, and we are into extra time.

Real Salt Lake 1

Series tied 1-1

91′ – Extra time period 1…start!

92′ – Juninho, and he wins a throw. That is not a good pass from Sean Franklin. Here comes Zardes. And another bad pass.

93′ – Opare concedes a free kick to Morales. And Olmes Garcia heads it wide left.

94′ – And another free kick conceded, this time by Sean Franklin. Cleared, and Khari Stephenson skies it over.

95′ – Penedo plays it forward. Nice set of touches from the hosts.

96′ – Good pressure here from Real Salt Lake. Morales has a stinger.

97′ – Yellow card 23 Khari Stephenson
Real Salt Lake

And Marcelo Sarvas is hurt. Stephenson busted his right knee.

98′ – Free kick for the Galaxy here.

99′ – Zardes hits the side netting. A number of players for the Galaxy have just been awful tonight. Zardes is one of them. Rogers is another.

100′ – LA on the attack, Zardes plays it back. Bad shots from Keane, Zardes and Donovan. Neither team can buy a goal tonight!

101′ – Another set piece for Real Salt Lake. Bruce Arena can only shake his head. Morales is hurt. He’s playing through it, though

102′ – GOAL! Real Salt Lake 28 Chris Schuler
Real Salt Lake

And is that the goal that will send RSL through to the next round?

103′ – Side netting right there for the Galaxy. Corner for Donovan. Headed out. Opare again misses his marker there. This is going to be a corner for Real Salt Lake.

104′ – That would have been a brace there for Schuler. Penedo collects.

105′ – Morales exits and will be replaced by Cole Grossman.

105′ + 1′ – Corner here, taken short and quick. Questionable.

105′ + 2′ – End of the first extra time period.

End of 1st Extra Time

Real Salt Lake lead 2-1

If the season ends tonight for Los Angeles, expect Kofi Opare to be the man responsible.

106′ – Can Los Angeles save their season? Or will I have to write their obituary this soon? Stay tuned.

107′ – A little bit of a push from Jose Villareal, who came in for Opare, who may have dug his own grave tonight.

108′ – Nick Rimando plays it forward. Now here is a free kick for LA. Not a good free kick from Donovan.

109′ – Bad play from Gyasi Zardes. Oh dear.

110′ – Alvaro Saborio is coming off the pitch. RSL are down to 10 men.

111′ – Infringement on the set piece for LA. It’s Donovan, the main culprit.

112′ – And now it’s a handball from Gyasi Zardes. Clutch clearance from Real Salt Lake. Bad touch from Laurent Courtois.

113′ – Awful header from Villareal.

114′ – A deflection from RSL. Corner for LA. Cole Grossman is playing out of his skins tonight.

115′ – That is a terrible cross from Laurent Courtois. And every mistake that LA is making tonight is piling up.

116′ – Finally, Rimando makes what could be the save of the series.

117′ – Villareal can’t believe that one. He’ll want that one back.

118′ – Omar Gonzalez wins that ball.

119′ – This is a throw-in for RSL here. Just seconds away now.

120′ – Corner for Donovan. Zardes with a bad, bad, finish. Two minutes of stoppage time remaining.

120′ + 1′ – Well, the Rio Tinto Stadium crowd is loving this. Nick Rimando with the collection.

120′ + 2′ – Sean Franklin misses a header opportunity, and that may be it. That’s it!
