T-105: Welcome to the Live Blog between the Los Angeles Galaxy and Colorado Rapids, live from the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. My name is Jo-Ryan Salazar, the editor for the View from Avalon here on the FanSided Network. Glad to have you on board once again.
Bruce Arena’s Los Angeles Galaxy are currently 1-0-1 (4 points) and are in the middle of the MLS Western Conference, while Oscar Pareja’s Colorado Rapids are 0-2-1 (1 point) and are languishing near the bottom.
T-100: This is Week 4 of the 2013 Major League Soccer season, and we have some housekeeping to take care of. We have some results to run over here on The View. The Columbus Crew defeated D.C. United 2-1 thanks to goals from Josh Williams in the 15th minute and Ben Speas in the 58th minute of play. Rafael scored for D.C. in the 22nd minute.
The New England Revolution and Sporting Kansas City played to a scoreless draw. Finally, a 14th-minute goal from Marco Di Vaio gave the Montreal Impact a 1-0 shutout victory over the New York Red Bulls, securing their place at the top of next week’s MLS Power Rankings here on the View from Avalon.
T-95: Omar Gonzalez and the USA Men’s National Team played in the snow yesterday at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. and defeated Costa Rica 1-0. Robbie Keane and the Republic of Ireland were only able to manager a scoreless draw with Sweden.
As for the rest of the Los Angeles Galaxy, it’s a case of “What…us worry?”
“No one’s really panicking, but Robbie’s obviously a pretty key figure for us,” said forward Mike Magee to LAGalaxy.com’s Larry Morgan. “He’s probably the most dangerous player in the league and tends to create things out of nothing. He’ll definitely be missed.
“We have to give some other guys a chance to step up and prove their worth.”
Arena believes that the Rapids will pose a challenge similar to Chivas USA, who they drew last Sunday 1-1.
“They’ve had a little disruption with injuries to start the season, but they’ve done a good job,” Arena said of the Rapids. “They’re real solid defensively. They’re going to come into The Home Depot Center and give us all we can handle for 90 minutes.”
T-90: We are 90 minutes away from kickoff here at the Home Depot Center. Some odds from Oddschecker…
Los Angeles Galaxy 8/11
Colorado Rapids 9/2
Early in the first half, the Houston Dynamo and Vancouver Whitecaps are scoreless, as are FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake. Also going on tonight is a match between the San Jose Earthquakes and Seattle Sounders. Tomorrow, the Chicago Fire host Chivas USA.
T-85: One player to keep an eye out for is forward Deshorn Brown, who has been a player of interest in the 10 Bold Predictions for this match.
“He’s definitely a threat with his speed to get behind back lines and that’s how they’ve been utilizing them,” Arena told LAGalaxy.com’s Adam Serrano. “He scored an opportunistic goal against Salt Lake by stripping a defender and having a great finish. He’s a player that we’re well aware of and he’s really had a great start in the league.”

T-80: The weather is 64 degrees Fahrenheit, partly cloudy, and will cool down as night falls. Good early spring football weather.
T-75: Tight contests going on at BBVA Compass Stadium and FC Dallas Stadium: no goals in Texas as of yet. This Tuesday, President Obama will greet the Galaxy and sister AEG club Los Angeles Kings at the White House in Washington, D.C. There will also be a soccer clinic afterwards.
T-73: We have a goal in Houston, and it’s Darren Mattocks for Vancouver in the 36th minute. The Whitecaps will hold on to their No. 2 spot in the MLS Power Rankings if they can prevail tonight.
T-62: Little over an hour to kickoff. Halftime in Texas: Vancouver leads Houston 1-0 and Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas are still scoreless. Lineups and the rest are coming soon here on the View from Avalon. Once again, this is the Live Blog between the Los Angeles Galaxy and Colorado Rapids.
T-40: Both teams now on the pitch. A little update on odds…
Los Angeles Galaxy 8/11
Colorado Rapids 55/12
T-35: Back to a little national team news. Will Costa Rica lodge a protest against the USA, and will they be successful?
“We were robbed,” Costa Rica midfielder Cristian Bolaños told MLSsoccer.com postgame. “I think the whole world is going to commentate, ‘What is that game?’ The referees that we had today didn’t handle it properly. They cost us three points.”
The USA continue their World Cup quest next Tuesday against Mexico at Estadio Azteca in the Match of the Hexagonal.
T-34: Houston have equalized thanks to Giles Barnes. It’s 1-1 at BBVA.
T-30: A half-hour to go. Marvell Wynne has been a solid force in the back for the Colorado Rapids over the years. Expect Wynne to put on another solid performance against Los Angeles.
“Right now I think the biggest thing I have to work on is my comfort level receiving the ball with a little pressure on me and dribbling at players,” Wynne told German Sferra for ColoradoRapids.com. “I didn’t have that pressure so tight on me at center back. But now going against players, going to my right, going to my left, I think that’s all going to be beneficial.”

FIRST HALF START: 7:38 P.M. PT/10:38 P.M. ET
1′ – And we’re underway. Colorado to kickoff. Defender Todd Dunivant, the Iron Man of the Galaxy, is our Captain of the Day for LA.
2′ – According to the 10 Bold Predictions, Colorado are called to score first. Will it happen? Stay tuned. Here is Carlo Cudicini. The aforementioned Deshorn Brown with a touch. No way Mike Magee was going to get to that one. A foul, says Armando Villareal. Goal kick.
3′ – Corner for Juninho. Clint Irwin with the first big save of the game. Second corner taken short and cleared. Dunivant with the throw.
4′ – This doesn’t look like the bruiser variety that Chivas brought last weekend. Now there is also-aforementioned Marvell Wynne. A throw-in for journeyman Atiba Harris, also mentioned in the Bold Predictions.
5′ – Marcelo Sarvas loses the argument there. And Sarvas is jammed again. Well-defended by the Rapids midfield. Here come Colorado with an opportunity.
6′ – Conrter for LA is swallowed up. Bit indecisive from Colin Clark. He elects to play it safe. Now here is A.J. DeLaGarza. Through ball doesn’t work. And Clark is challenged.
7′ – Sean Franklin now. Through ball to Dunivant is intercepted. Foul, on LA. Time for Pablo Mastroeni to fancy his chances.
8′ – Hendry Thomas with the challenge. Too far, out for a goal kick. Slow first half. Still early. But Los Angeles are looking dangerous. Leonardo with the touch. And this is Sarvas.
9′ – Great defending again…not a creative shot from Clark. May want to cross it next time.
10′ – This is Jack McBean, and Juninho can’t hold on to that one. Bad pass. What a save from Irwin on McBean!
11′ – Another chance goes array and Clint Irwin is earning his stripes tonight. A few great saves in the first 10 minutes.
12′ – Back to DeLaGarza. And now it’s Leonardo. Back to Juninho. Clark wins a throw. McBean is held up.
13′ – These are the types of contests that will test veterans who don’t normally get the armband. Brown loses his footing. Not a good shot and we have a player down. Looks like it’s Villareal.
14′ – And JV takes his lumps against this team. Colorado with the advantage for the time being.
15′ – Back comes Villareal, his head still ringing. Leo, to AJ. Not a good touch from McBean. Foul on LA.
16′ – Cudi resets. Bit of a tough nut to crack, the Rapids are, especially with LA losing some depth.
17′ – Villareal should have done better. Goal kick, Irwin. Leonardo wins that battle.
18′ – Irwin comes off his line and collects. Here’s Mastroeni. Thomas gets fouled. Collection for Cudicini.
19′ – Throw-in for the Galaxy. LA winning the possession battle, Colorado forced to defend. Dunivant again.
20′ – I think McBean and Villareal need to improve on their speed because Mike Magee can’t do it alone.
21′ – Not sure what the fans are complaining, that goal kick to Colorado was the right call. Marcelo Sarvas wins another duel. Dunivant shaken up.
22′ – Leonardo now, Clark, DeLaGarza, and that through ball to Villareal is picked off. Here come the Rapids.
23′ – Atiba Harris with a shot. That is collected. Colin Clark with a bad dribble.
24′ – Match has slowed down to a crawl at the Home Depot Center. Let’s see if both teams can accelerate the pace. Magee is hurt. He is hurt. And so is Hendry Thomas.
25′ – That’s a physical 50-50 ball duel between those two players. Colorado will take the restart.
26′ – Boy, Clark has underwhelmed tonight. Again. Where was that cross going to?
27′ – Substitution Colorado Rapids
IN 14 Tony Cascio
OUT 25 Pablo Mastroeni
28′ – Cudicini’s distribution is the only plus for him. Offside, Harris.
29 ‘ – And Jack McBean nearly got to that won. Nice job by Sarvas to keep the ball in play.
30′ – Good idea for the quick restart, but Jose Villareal is not going to get to that one.
31′ – First corner for the Rapids. LA have been taking up a lot of the possession so far. Here’s Harris. That’s cleared. And that chance goes array.
32′ – Nice hustle by Colorado to get to that one before it went in. Wow. The Rapids are dodging bullets left and right here. Sloppy defending from Colorado.
33′ – Oscar Pareja may have to get another sub here. Two subs in the first half. That is never a good sign.
34′ – Final scores: Houston 2, Vancouver 1…Dallas 2, Real Salt Lake 0.
Substitution Colorado Rapids
IN 15 Chris Klute
OUT 5 Diego Calderon
35′ – What a free-flowing first half of football we have here. Offsides, Colorado.
36′ – Too much thinking from Marcelo Sarvas. Another save from Irwin!
37′ – Leonardo with the hold-up.
38′ – Juninho slips on the pitch. Over-watered? And Mike Magee is wondering, where is the card?
39′ – Colin Clark won’t get to that ball, and neither will Jack McBean. This is a very fast surface.
40′ – Throw-in for Colorado. Back come LA, but McBean is too slow. Magee wins a throw. And McBean with a very lazy header. Could have been fouled in the box.
41′ – I think Armando Villareal will be pulling out the cards in the second half. That’s my best guess.
42′ – Corner, LA. Not well-defended by Tony Cascio. This is Juninho to take. Take…two.’
43′ – Cleared, and Colin Clark concedes a throw-in to the Rapids.
44′ – This is another sloppy game from the Galaxy, especially given that Omar Gonzalez and Robbie Keane are away to national team duty. A little bit too much from Clark.
45′ – That’s a bad foul to commit. Three minutes of additional time.
45′ + 1′ – Will Mike Magee take this one?
45′ + 2′ – No, it’s Juninho! Didn’t miss by much, either.
45′ + 3′ – And it looks like the Rapids will be happy to go into the locker room tied at this point. Room for one more set piece. Cleared. That should be it for the first half of play.

In the other match going on right now, the San Jose Earthquakes lead the Seattle Sounders 1-0.
SECOND HALF START: 8:42 P.M. PT/11:42 P.M. ET
46′ – The second half begins.
47′ – Bruce Arena can’t believe it. Armando Villareal is allowing the play to continue here. Seems to me that the Colorado fans are snowed in. Nowhere to be seen. Corner, Los Angeles. Take…two.
48′ – I think the strategy for Colorado is to strike carefully. And that will not work…
Red Card 3 Drew Moor
Here we go again…this is just like last weekend.
49′ – Penalty for Los Angeles.
50′ – GOAL! Los Angeles Galaxy 18 Mike Magee
Who better to do it…other than the master himself.
51′ – There may have to be a change of plans here…Colorado are a goal down and a man down. We got a wide-open contest on the way.
52′ – Substitution Colorado Rapids
IN 27 Shane O’Neill
OUT 7 Kevin Harbottle
53′ – Jack McBean with some defending. Throw-in for Tony Cascio.
54′ – That pass had too much pace and won’t reach McFrijolito. Collected by Cudicini.
55′ – Corner, LA. And there went my prediction of Colorado scoring first.
56′ – One thing the Galaxy are infamous for is giving up goals late in contests. So no one who is sane should count the Rapids out of this one. Here is Sarvas.
57′ – LA is slowing it down a bit. Sean Franklin with a touch. The Galaxy win a throw.
58′ – Now here is Cascio, to Marvell Wynne. Through ball is snuffed. Here’s Hendry Thomas.
59′ – Marcelo Sarvas with the long cross upfield. Mike Magee now, and here’s Franklin. Good distribution.
60′ – If you’re just joining us on this live blog, LA are leading 1-0 thanks to Mike Magee. Pass from Franklin is intercepted by Cascio.
61′ – And Franklin hustles to collect. I’m calling No. 5’s name a lot here. A.J. DeLaGarza being a bit reckless.
62′ – Now here’s Juninho. Los Angeles need to put it together and build on their advantage because this is still anyone’s ball game.
63′ – Corner now for Colorado. Rapids are in need of a break. That’s cleared by DeLaGarza. But the visitors maintain possession. Collected by Cudicini.
64′ – Yellow card 12 Hendry Thomas
Easy yellow, really. That’s goalkeeper interference. Call that with Braille.
65′ – A throw-in for Los Angeles. LA are dominating the stats. Foul on the Rapids. This will be a dangerous free kick for Juninho.
66′ – Cleared, and that will be a goal kick.
Substitution Los Angeles Galaxy
IN 26 Michael Stephens
OUT 33 Jose Villareal
67′ – Stephens with some mop-up work. This means we could be seeing Mike Magee slide up top. LA looking to take the bull by the horns. Bit of a delay here. Goal kick to Clint Irwin.
68′ – Free kick for the Rapids. No one in the vicinity in burgundy. Goal kick to the hosts.
69′ – Magee. And a ball for Michael Stephens is intercepted. Colorado will look to win the possession battle late. They won’t do it with those through balls, though.
70′ – Stephens now. Brian Mullan with a clearance. First time I called his name. Marcelo Sarvas gave it the ol’ Galaxy try.
71′ – Substitution Los Angeles Galaxy
IN16 Hector Jimenez
OUT 11 Colin Clark
72′ – And the back line is melting some clock here. I’m not sure why, though.
73′ – Yellow card 8 Marcelo Sarvas
Los Angeles Galaxy
Looks like a handball right there. Easy call.
74′ – I will say that Clint Irwin has acquitted himself tonight. Good saves in the first half. DeLaGarza is wondering why the men in white aren’t pressing forward.
75′ – Here is Chris Klute. Good speed and all. That looked dangerous, but the danger is averted for Colorado.
76′ – Stephens. Throw-in for the Galaxy. And it seems to me that Colorado are content giving up possession this late. We may have an interesting finish on our hands.
77′ – Thomas gets challenged. That sequence from LA looked promising. 19,936 in attendance tonight.
78′ – And that’s why you are a perennial sub, Michael Stephens. Not a good touch to be a starter. Mike Magee with finesse, and Sarvas wins a restart.
79′ – Goal kick to Clint Irwin. The fans wanted a corner.
80′ – I seem to wonder if Colorado paid any attention to the Chivas tape. Doesn’t look like it.
81′ – Here’s a chance. McBean plays it back. No dice. Goal kick, Clint Irwin.
82′ – Hendry Thomas has been unsettling the Galaxy tonight. That shot went wide left.
83′ – A bit of the Harlem Globetrotters from Los Angeles? Of all teams? At least there’s no snow this time.
84′ – Substitution Los Angeles Galaxy
IN 25 Rafael Garcia
OUT 8 Marcelo Sarvas
85′ – Here’s Sean Franklin. This could be a 1-0 victory here. Garcia now.
86′ – Jack McBean just can’t get a break tonight. Clint Irwin has had his number.
87′ – Los Angeles with some distribution, and clock management.
88′ – Franklin now, and Chris Klute sweeps. Now here is Hector Jimenez. Bit of a rough challenge on Juninho.
89′ – Bad cross. And the counter fizzles out. Now here is Franklin again.
90′ – Rafael Garcia, Magee, McBean, and that is swept. Three minutes of additional time
90′ + 1′ – Free kick for the Rapids. And I’m not sure why Colorado are playing it back.
90′ + 2′ – Los Angeles are electing to play it safe. Or are they? Clint Irwin comes up big yet again.
90′ + 3′ – Corner for the Galaxy. They may just want to take it short to risk one final salvo. They do. That’s it.
