Of the three teams from Mexican Liga BBVA MX that have been on the Los Angeles Galaxy's League Cup schedule, their third and final opponent may be the easiest.
At 1-0-2 and 11th in the Mexican Liga BBVA MX, Santos has dropped both of their games in Phase One. A pair of 2-1 losses to the Colorado Rapids and the Seattle Sounders ended Santos's efforts in advancing in this year's Leagues Cup.
The LA Galaxy, however, still have a chance to do so on Thursday. A win over Santos may not come easy, though, because of these two athletes.
1. Carlos Acevedo
The 29-year-old goalkeeper for Santos is playing better in League Cup than in the Mexican Liga BBVA MX. Perfect timing before he faces veteran midfielder Marco Reus and the 2024 MLS Cup winners.
In three games for Santos's season, Acevedo has made 10 saves while allowing five goals. Yet, during two games at the Leagues Cup, the Mexican-born player made four saves while allowing just two goals against the Rapids.
We have seen the Los Angeles Galaxy offensive attack go stale before. After scoring five goals against Club Tijuana, it took the six-time MLS Cup champions 81 minutes to score their first goal against Cruz Azul.
2. Ramiro Sordo
While this Santos star has not scored yet during Phase One, Sordo has two goals on the season in the Mexican Liga BBVA MX. What's even more impressive is that the midfielder from Argentina has only taken five shots to do so.
Even as a sub in the loss against Colorado, Sordo managed to record an assist on his team's only goal in the game. His pass to Jordan Carillo in the 53rd minute gave Santos the 1-0 lead early in the second half of play.
Sordo could give fits to the LA Galaxy's defense, especially if he is matched up against midfielder Edwin Cerrillo. Santos and the Galaxy will do battle on Thursday night to conclude Phase One of the 2025 Leagues Cup.
