Has the LA Galaxy Had Any Success in Leagues Cup Play Before?

Despite losing in the Round of 32 last year, many forget if the LA Galaxy have won this title before.

All may not be entirely lost in 2025 for the LA Galaxy. History has not been kind to the defending MLS Cup champions this year.

After starting out the regular season winless in their first 16 games, the Los Angeles Galaxy have gone 3-2-3. Two of their three wins in that span have been 2-0 shutouts at home.

Head Coach Greg Vanney expects that same level of competitiveness and energy from his team when they take the field Thursday night against Club Tijuana. This will be the first of three games for the LA Galaxy in Group Play for the 2025 Leagues Cup.

Fans of soccer are surely aware of the level of success for the LA Galaxy in MLS, having made it to ten Finals and won six of them. However, have the 2024 MLS Cup winners won at the Leagues Cup before?

The LA Galaxy have raised more than just MLS trophies before.

Last year wasn't their best showing in the Leagues Cup. A 3-1 loss to the Seattle Sounders was enough to end the Los Angeles Galaxy's hopes of winning a second championship on this stage.

In the past few appearances at the Leagues Cup, stars like Tyler Boyd, Javier Hernandez, Cristian Pavon, and Dejan Joveljic have shined before. However, neither of those players are with the LA Galaxy. Riqui Puig is still on the roster but is still out recovering from ACL surgery.

Six years ago, the LA Galaxy ousted their opponent, Club Tijuana, during the quarterfinals. Cruz Azul then beat the Galaxy in the semifinals before becoming the 2019 Leagues Cup champions.

The Chicago Fire, Real Salt Lake and the Houston Dynamo were the only other MLS teams to make it out of the Group Stage that year. All three lost in the quarterfinals.

In 2023, the LA Galaxy failed to win any games during the Group Stage. Last year, they were ousted by the Seattle Sounders in the Round of 32.

According to the LA Galaxy's team site, "Since May 31, Marco Reus has logged two goals and five assists in seven matches played, Matheus Nascimento has recorded six goal contributions (3 goals, 3 assists) in eight matches."

If the LA Galaxy are going to have the same type of success as they did in 2019 (or better), than they will need for Reus and Nascimento to find the back of the net on Thursday night. The Los Angeles Galaxy takes the field against Tijuana with kickoff at 8:00 p.m. (ET) and 10:00 p.m. (CT).
