Why the Los Angeles Galaxy have an interest in Wednesday's Concacaf game

Major League Soccer opened up its 30th regular season over the weekend. Prior to that, the Concacaf Champions Cuphas been in existence for twice as long. The Los Angeles Galaxy earned a berth into the 2025 tournament when it won their sixth MLS Cup last season.

The last time the LA Galaxy won the Concafac Cup was in 2000. Only one MLS team has won the Cup since and that was the Seattle Sounders three years ago.

Wednesday night will feature another MLS team, Real Salt Lake, battling to advance to the Round of 16 against Costa Rican based Herediano. A week ago, the two teams played to a scoreless draw.

Thus, Galaxy fans will want to watch for the results of this one as the await to play the victor. Tonight's winner will move on in the tournament to face the Los Angeles Galaxy. The loser is eliminated from the 2025 Concafac Champions Cup.

When will the LA Galaxy host the winner of Wednesday's game?

Of the 10 MLS teams to qualify for the 2025 Concafac Tournament, Real Salt Lake is ranked seventh, only above the Vancouver Whitecaps, Colorado Rapids and Sporting Kansas City.

The Los Angeles Galaxy's crosstown rival, LAFC, ousted the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday evening thanks to former Galaxy midfielder Marky Delgado. Teammate David Martinez recorded the assist on laser focus cross pass to Delgado.

LAFC will face Columbus Crew in the Round of 16. This is also a rematch of the 2023 MLS Cup Finals.

Also on Tuesday night, former LA Galaxy forward Dejan Joveljic's new team (Sporting Kansas City) exited the tournament. They suffered two losses to Inter Miami as they had no answer for Lionel Messi who outscored Sporting alone. Inter Miami will now host Jamaican soccer club Cavalier next week.

The Los Angeles Galaxy will host either Herediano or Real Salt Lake on Wednesday, March 5th at Dignity Health Sports Park. The winner of the single elimination game advances to the Concafac Tournament's Quarterfinals.

It was the 2013 Concafac Quarterfinals when the Los Angeles Galaxy last played Herediano. A 4-1 victory moved the Galaxy past Herediano. Goals from Omar González (17'), Jose Villarreal (68'), 'Robbie Keane (82'), and Jack McBean (90') sealed the win.

The Los Angeles Galaxy earned a tie and a win against RSL during the regular season last year. The teams played to a 2-2 draw on May 11. After being down 2-0 thanks to Cristian Arango's two scores, the Galaxy answered back with goals from Gabriel Pec (54') and Miguel Berry (90'+4').

This is the first time in a decade that the LA Galaxy have competed in the Concafac Champions Cup. They made it as far as the Quarterfinals before losing 4-0 to Santos Laguna. Regardless of who wins on Wednesday between Herediano and Real Salt Lake, the Los Angeles Galaxy will be ready and perhaps end another decade long drought.
