The last time that these two soccer clubs took the field against one another was in North Carolina during the middle of May last year. Both squads qualified for the postseason but only one's season ended by hoisting the MLS Finals Cup.
A scoreless tie didn't help the Los Angeles Galaxy's efforts in locking up the number one seed in the Western Conference by season's end. Their crosstown rival LAFC ended up with the top seed thanks to one more goal than the Galaxy in terms of differential.
Had the LA Galaxy scored that day in May against Charlotte,... but it worked out for the six-time champions. They hope that things will workout once more for them on Sunday.
In their second game at in Indio, California this month, the LA Galaxy will face Charlotte FC. The Galaxy are coming off a 1-1 draw against Austin FC. This was days after a 2-0 defeat by the hands (or feet ) of NYFC.
During both preseason games thus far, the LA Galaxy has played an almost perfect defense. At about the 80th minute or so is when they have let opponents score. NYFC did so at the 86' and 90'+6' marks. Austin FC found the net at the 79' on Wednesday.
Some history between the LA Galaxy and Charlotte FC
Last year saw these two teams meet for just the fifth time ever. Charlotte FC entered the league in 2021 whereas the LA Galaxy have been around since the inaugural season in 1996.
The Galaxy won the first ever match back in 2022 by a score of 1-0. The next match took place at the end of January during the preseason and finished in a 0-0 tie.
Charlotte FC won 1-0 in the first week of May a season later. They blanked the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-0 around this time last year in the preseason, as well.
With a win on Saturday, the LA Galaxy could even up the all-time series (2-2-2) versus the relative new franchise in MLS.
The game will start at 10:00 a.m. PT and 2:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, February 9. The last time the LA Galaxy lost to Charlotte FC during the regular season, they did not qualify for the postseason. When they won against them, they did make the playoffs.
