Wednesday was big for the Los Angeles Galaxy. However, it did not start out that way.

In some recent games, the Galaxy have had to claw their way out of early deficits. Their latest game was no different.

Late in the first half, goalkeeper John McCarthy was unable to block Connor Ronan's strike that found the back of the net. This allowed the host, Colorado Rapids, to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The stars aligned for the Galaxy as they were able to respond early in the second half. Five minutes in, Gabriel Pec tied it up at one goal a piece with his 14th goal of the season.

It didn't take more than eight minutes for the LA Galaxy to score again. Pec assisted on the score by Riqui Puig. This was his 12th goal of the season. He and the first-place Galaxy weren't done.

Per usual, the Los Angeles Galaxy score in bunches as they put a danger in the Rapids hopes of tying the game with Puig's 13th goal of the season, Miguel Berry, who replaced Dejan Joveljic at the 88th minute, assisted on the teams third and final goal of the night.

Other notables regarding the victory over Colorado

The absence of Marco Reus was noticed but not felt too terribly bad as the Galaxy scored three second half goals to give them a second win in a row and third in their last four games. The German soccer standout is nursing an injury to a hamstring.

Head Coach Greg Vanney is not taking any chances with ambitions of a sixth MLS Cup for the franchise this fall. Reus may sit out the Galaxy's last two regular seasons to allow him to rest.

A rare appearance from midfielder Isaiah Parente. This was only his fifth game he has checked in for all season. Berry and Diego Fagundez subbed into the game at the same time.

What does this win mean for the Galaxy?

With the win, the LA Galaxy are guaranteed a top two finish in the Western Conference. Only LAFC can mathematically take over first place as they have three games left on the year and trail the Galaxy by six points.

Both teams play on Saturday as the Galaxy will host Austin FC and LAFC travels to play Sporting Kansas City. The five-time MLS champions will need to win to maintain their hold on first place.

Since the Galaxy won on Wednesday night, a win on Saturday for the Galaxy coupled with a loss or even a tie by LAFC would lock up the Western Conference's top seed. That would give Pec, Puig and company homefield advantage throughout the playoffs (except potentially the MLS finals).

The Galaxy are undefeated at Dignity Health Sports Park this year. That is where their next game is scheduled to be played at. A win on Saturday would also eliminate Austin FC from the playoff picture.
