In the world of Major League Soccer, the arrival of high-profile players such as Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, along with stars like Sergio Busquets, Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, Hugo Lloris, and Olivier Giroud, has certainly drawn attention.
However, it was the LA Galaxy who pioneered the concept of 'Galácticos' in American soccer. Now, the Galaxy is making headlines again with the acquisition of Marco Reus, marking a significant moment for the club and the league.
Marco Reus, who has spent nearly his entire career with Borussia Dortmund, is joining LA Galaxy on a free transfer. At 35 years old, Reus has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, which will keep him with the Galaxy until at least the end of the 2026 season.
This move is expected to make a substantial impact on the Los Angeles side, which has been looking to make a statement after seeing LAFC secure big names like Lloris and Giroud.
LA Galaxy OFFICIALLY announces Marco Reus's arrival to MLS
In an official statement, LA Galaxy General Manager Will Kuntz expressed his excitement about Reus's arrival:
“Marco Reus is a world-class player who has performed at the highest level of the sport, including playing in two Champions League finals with Borussia Dortmund and representing Germany in the FIFA World Cup. For Marco, a two-time Bundesliga Player of the Year, joining the Galaxy after spending his entire career in Germany is a testament to the project we are building at the club. We look forward to Marco’s contributions to LA Galaxy as we head into the crucial final stretch of the 2024 MLS season and beyond.”
Greg Vanney, the Galaxy’s head coach, also shared his enthusiasm about the new addition: “We are thrilled to welcome Marco to the team. He is a proven winner and a leader whose talent and vision will seamlessly integrate into our squad as we prepare for the league restart and the push towards the playoffs.”
During his twelve-season stint with Borussia Dortmund, Reus made 429 appearances, scoring 170 goals and providing 131 assists.
Despite facing challenges with injuries at times, his quality remains undeniable. Reus’s arrival at LA Galaxy promises to inject a significant boost into the team’s attacking options and bring a wealth of experience to the MLS stage.
