While it always feels good to win, it's also another exciting experience to make history, too, along the way. That's exactly what the Los Angeles Galaxy did on Saturday night.
In 1998, the LA Galaxy became the only team in MLS history to field a trio that scored ten goals or more. Cobi Jones (19 goals, 13 assists), Welton (17 goals, 11 assists) and Mauricio Cienfuegos (13 goals, 16 assists) accomplished this feat.
This year, the Galaxy matched that record with Dejan Joveljic, Gabriel Pec and Riqui Puig all had 10 goals or more entering Saturday night's contest against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Forward Joseph Paintsil not only added his tenth goal of the season in the 4-2 victory, but he put this Galaxy quartet in the history books, as well.
Never has the league seen four players from the same team score ten goals or more. All four have logged at least five assists or more, too. Puig has 14 assists, which is as many goals as Joveljic has on the year. Pec has 12 and Paintsil is one away from ten.
How did the Galaxy accomplish this historical record?
Joveljic started out the season with five goals in as many games. He would only go on to score two more in the following eight games he appeared in. A lingering lower body injury saw him miss some time from the field, too.
On Wednesday May 29th, the Galaxy hosted Dallas FC. Joveljic took a season high six shot attempts and four of them were on target (also a season high). The Serbian forward's two goals helped the team win 3-1.
After a rare loss to open up the month of May, the LA Galaxy embarked on a four-game win streak. Joveljic added three more goals and three more assists during this time.
This gave him a dozen scores on the season. His 13th and 14th came in the second half come back when the Galaxy hosted rival LAFC.
Pec has played in all but one game so far for the Galaxy. He has started in 27 games while coming off the bench in three more. His first goal of the year was the deciding factor in the 1-0 win against the Seattle Sounders.
A sporadic scorer, his passing has been a major contribution, too. Pec has three games with two assists including Saturday night's historic win over the Whitecaps.
Pec's 10th goal came two months ago in the 3-2 victory over the Timbers. In the Galaxy's four games this month, Pec has scored in all of them aside from the rubber match vs. LAFC.
Puig nailed his tenth goal of the season in that same game against LAFC. The midfielder from Spain has scored in streaks. His first and second scores came in the second and third games of the season.
His sixth goal of the year was the only one in the surprising 2-1 upset at Chicago. That was his third game in a row with a goal.
In the last six games Puig has played in, he has scored in five of them. The only one he went scoreless in was the loss at Portland recently.
"It's really an amazing thing that the four of us have 10-plus goals. It will also give us the confidence to do extra more and to also write our name in the history book of LA Galaxy at the end of the season."Joseph Paintsil, LA Galaxy forward
The third and final member of the Galaxy's 'Killer P's" to join in the fun is Paintsil. His first goal as a member of the LA Galaxy came in early March on the road against San Jose.
By the time Paintsil and the Galaxy played their next away game against the Earthquakes, Paintsil added his sixth goal of the season. That 3-0 victory would be the third against San Jose and put the Galaxy in position to be where they are at now: first place.
In mid-July, Paintsil scored in back-to-back games. This would mark his seventh and eighth goals in his debut season in MLS.
Recently, Paintsil has again scored in consecutive games. He found the net for number nine against the Timbers and connected on number ten Saturday night against the Whitecaps.
What's next for the Los Angeles Galaxy?
"The Killer P's" have made headlines as of late for their offensive prowess and accomplishments. Though Puig has been with the team for a few years now, this is the first for Pec and Paintsil. These two newcomers are the first-ever pairing in MLS history to have 10 or more goals and assists, each, in their rookie season.
The team has already secured a playoff berth as have Real Salt Lake and their next opponent, the Rapids. Because of LAFC's recent struggles to find wins, their day to clinch will have to wait.
While it feels good to make history during the season, the Los Angeles Galaxy would rather make history at the end of the season. They have the chance to do so by winning another MLS Championship. It would give the franchise their sixth, beating their current record of five titles.
