The LA Galaxy host Atlanta United on Sunday night, the first matchup between the two sides in almost three years.

The Galaxy go into the match in dire need of a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, having lost four of their last five games in league play (and five of six including a US Open Cup defeat to Sacramento Republic FC).

27 points from 20 games has been enough to keep Greg Vanney's side clinging onto the final playoff spot by their fingernails, but the packed middle class of the Western Conference means that a team as far back as the 12th-placed Colorado Rapids are just three points behind.

Fortunately, they find themselves up against a side on almost as bad a run in Atlanta, with two wins in their last ten games – and one in their last six – leaving them 11th in the East and chasing to catch up with the pack of playoff hopefuls.

Atlanta United team news vs LA Galaxy

Atlanta are a little more hit by the injury bug than the Galaxy, with knees a particular (literal) sore spot. Midfielder Osvaldo Alonso is still out with a torn ACL, while Ronald Hernandez and Brooks Lennon have MCL issues limiting their own availability. It's not all knees though, with Emerson Hyndman and Andrew Gutman both out with muscular problems.

LA Galaxy vs Atlanta United score prediction

Neither team is in anything like convincing form, but the Galaxy should have an edge in getting their first ever win over Atlanta this weekend.

The return of Chicharito from health and safety protocols could be a boost in both quality and morale, while Atlanta's problems have begun to manifest off the pitch – with rumors that Josef Martinez's benching for the last two games is due to comments he made about his side's undeniable underperformance.

Add all of that to home field advantage, and this game could help LA Galaxy solidify their playoff position slightly.

Score prediction: LA Galaxy 2-1 Atlanta United
