The Los Angeles Galaxy do it again. They make a splash in the international signing pool during the winter months.
Now, the six-time MLS Cup winners have inked Mathias Jorgensen to a two-year deal to join the Western Conference juggernauts. Jorgensen is also better known by his nickname "Zanka."
The LA Galaxy's team site first reported the news of the transaction on Wednesday morning. Zanka will join the likes of John Nelson, Miki Yamane, and last year's captain Maya Yoshida.
"We are thrilled to welcome Zanka to the LA Galaxy. Zanka is a five-time Danish League and Danish Cup champion, has experience in the English Premier League and has represented Denmark in over 30 matches including at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. "Will Kuntz, GM of the LA Galaxy
He's made over 500 appearances top leagues of Belgium, Denmark, England, Germany, Netherlands and Turkey. The Copenhagen native is another international talent among the Los Angeles Galaxy like Marco Reus, Gabriel Pec and Dejan Joveljic.
Zanka's most recent club is R.S.C. Anderlecht out of the country of Belgium. Before his time in Belgium, he played for Brentford FC on the English Premier League side.
During Zanka's tenure with his Danish National Team, he has found the back of the net twice including the 2018 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against Croatia.
His professional soccer began with FC Copenhagen where Zanka recorded 19 goals and five assists in over 300 appearances with the club. He also started 269 of those games.
"Zanka’s quality and experience will be a great addition to our group as we prepare to participate in multiple competitions in the upcoming season."Will Kuntz, GM of the LA Galaxy
This signing is another indication that General Manager Will Kuntz is in win-now mode to capture the franchise's seventh MLS Cup. Only three teams in league history have won consecutive titles.
DC United and the Houston Dynamo both have accomplished this feat prior to when the LA Galaxy did so in 2011 and 2012. Entering the 30th season for MLS, Kuntz and his Head Coach Greg Vanney are poised to be the first team to win back-to-back titles twice.
The regular season for the LA Galaxy begins on February 23 when they host the newest addition to MLS. It will be the first game ever for expansion draft team San Diego FC.
