General Manager Will Kuntz was praised for his hard work last winter. In the off-season, he inked Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec to deals that brought their talents stateside.
As we know, the two additions fit in nicely for the Los Angeles Galaxy. Paintsil and Pec became the first pair of newcomers to MLS to both score ten goals and assist with ten goals as teammates.
Infusing those two with the established likes of Dejan Joveljic, Riqui Puig and company definitely netted the intended result. One month ago, the LA Galaxy hoisted their record sixth MLS Cup Title in an unprecedented tenth appearance in the Finals.
Kuntz and the LA Galaxy look to do the same, again, in 2025.
Know the name: Zanka
Though this has not been finalized, the Los Angeles Galaxy and Mathias Jorgensen are nearing an agreement to have the Dutch defender join the Western Conference powerhouse. He is better known by his household name, Zanka.
Current members of the Galaxy's defense Maya Yoshia and Miki Yamane are in their thirties. Julian Aude missed quite a few games last season to further test the depth on the LA Galaxy's roster.
Adding Zanka, 34, is rumored to liken a two-year deal to play for Head Coach Greg Vanney. The coveted defender signed a contract to play for Anderlecht. That deal was only for one year.
Prior to joining Anderlecht, Zanka played for Brentford. Primarly a center-back defender, he did score twice in the 40 appearances during the first half of this decade. The team that Zanka has played the longest for is FC Copenhagen.
He has made two stints with the soccer club, appearing in over 90 games both times, too. He found the back of the net 10 times during the 185 appearances for Copenhagen.
Internationally, Zanka has played for the Denmark National Team since 2008. In 37 appearances, he has scored twice.
It is not rare for defenders to score in MLS. Just as the LA Galaxy.
John Nelson had his first career score in Game 1 of the opening round of the Western Conference Playoffs. Nelson added a goal to the 5-0 blowout against the Colorado Rapids.
Yoshida was one of the 11 players that were unprotected during the MLS Expansion draft team. The league's newest edition, San Diego FC had the opportunity of taking the Galaxy's captain or any of the other ten players listed.
Martin Caceres is the oldest member of the LA Galaxy from the 2024 roster. He is 37 years old and may not be in the team's plans for the future after only appearing in 15 games this season.
Furthermore, Vanney's nephew was also a part of the 2024 roster for the LA Galaxy. Eriq Zavaleta has won two titles now while playing for his uncle. The relatives won first in 2017 with Toronto FC and recently with the Galaxy.
While it remains to be seen what the final roster will look like for the Los Angeles Galaxy come the 2025 MLS season, adding Zanka could pair nicely in the backfield alongside Nelson, Yoshida, Yamane and Carces. That leaves Aude and Jalen Neal to play off the bench as needed, too.
