If it wasn't for the Spaniard's injury last season, the LA Galaxy may not be at the bottom of the MLS Western Conference standings this year. However, if it wasn't for his tremendous season last year, the Los Angeles Galaxy would not have its sixth MLS Cup title. Puig was not able to play in the championship game back in December.
Riqui Puig, 26, celebrated his birthday on Wednesday this week. As he is recovering from ACL surgery, rumors are circulating about his return.
The star midfielder went down late in the second half of the 2024 MLS Western Conference Finals against the Seattle Sounders. The LA Galaxy won that game 1-0 but ended up losing to the Sounders 4-0 on Sunday night.
What's next for Puig and the LA Galaxy?
Despite not being cleared to play with his teammates this Saturday against Inter Miami, Puig has been added to the roster for their Knockout Round match against Pachuca next Wednesday.
The former Barcelona player enjoyed a strong 2024 season. Puig recorded 13 goals and 16 assists during the MLS regular season last year. He turned it up in the playoffs by scoring four times and recording three assists, including Dejan Joveljic's game-winner in the 2024 MLS Western Conference Finals.
"Riqui has been an elite midfielder during his time in MLS and ensuring that he will remain a critical piece of our team was crucial as we continue our pursuit of putting a championship-caliber squad on the field."Will Kuntz, GM of the LA Galaxy
Puig joined the LA Galaxy in 2022 but only played in eight games, ten if you count the playoffs.
According to the LA Times, Puig and the Los Angeles Galaxy agreed upon a contract extension through the 2027 MLS season.
In the meantime, fans can wish #10 Riqui Puig on the LA Galaxy a "Happy 26th Birthday" until he returns to the field.
