5. LA Galaxy set new record for most postseason goals in a year
Head Coach Greg Vanney and defender Eriz Zavaleta were a part of history before. Not only did the uncle-nephew duo win an MLS Cup Title together in 2017, they did so while setting a new record for most playoff goals scored in one postseason.
The Columbus Crew came close to that mark last year on their way to capture the 2023 MLS Cup. But close doesn't count.
This postseason, the Los Angeles Galaxy broke the mark set seven years ago as they scored a record 18 goals in the playoffs this season.
A 5-0 thrashing in Game 1 of the opening round against the Rapids saw the Galaxy well on their way. Game 2 ended with a 4-1 victory. Nine goals in two playoff games.
Player (Position) | # of Postseason Goals in 2024 |
---|---|
Dejan Joveljic, Forward | 6 |
Riqui Puig, Midfielder | 4 |
Joseph Paintsil, Forward | 4 |
Gabriel Pec, Forward | 3 |
John Nelson, Defender | 1 |
The Galaxy weren't out of firepower on offense. They won 6-2 at home against Minnesota.
In the Western Conference Finals, the Galaxy only needed one goal to win as it came from Joveljic late in the second half.
Two more goals in the MLS Cup Finals on Saturday gave the LA Galaxy the all-time record for most playoff scores in a single season. The new mark is at 18 goal thanks to the newly crowned six-time league champions.
