View from the New York Cosmos: November 22, 2013

Giovanni Savarese’s New York Cosmos winded down their trip to Spain with a 1-0 victory over the CF Villareal B team at the Mini Estadi in Villareal, Spain. Sebastian Guenzatti scored the only goal of the match for the Cosmos in the 30th minute of play thanks to a delivery from Diomar Diaz.

“It’s always a good feeling to score in any game,” Guenzatti told “Villarreal have been tremendous hosts during our trip and we’ve had a great time training here.”

Finally, Carlos Mendes, the Cosmos’s captain for the Fall 2013 season, was inducted into the Long Island Soccer Football League’s Hall of Fame class. Mendes played for the Mineola Portuguese Soccer Club in the 1990s and was inducted into the club’s hall of fame in 2009.

“I love the community I grew up in and it was so much fun to play here,” Mendes told “This is an honor to represent Mineola Portuguese. It’s great to be back and this is where I want to be when I finish my career.”

“We have been working on this for several years and are very excited to see it come to fruition,” added LISFL President Gus Xikis. “There are so many individuals who belong in the LISFL Hall of Fame and we will be inducting all of them in the years to come.”
