Talk about eating humble pie. Bruce Arena’s Los Angeles Galaxy slither and slide back to the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. searching for answers against Jose Luis Real’s Chivas USA on Oct. 6. With a 13-11-6 record (45 points) and their standing in the MLS Western Conference on the make, the Galaxy will need to answer the question: can they finally deliver in October?
Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT/5 p.m. ET and will be televised by UniMas and Time Warner Cable SportsNet. Here are 10 Bold Predictions for Sunday’s contest between the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA.
1. One goal scored in the first half
It’s been a recurring trend as of late: no goals being scored in the first 45 minutes. That is going to change this week: one goal will be scored in the first half on Sunday in Carson.
2. At least 30 fouls and three yellows
Had to get this out of the way early. This will be a physical encounter and one that will see a few players get booked. At least 30 fouls will be whistles and three yellow cards will be issued.
3. No goals or assists for Chivas USA
This Galaxy team is steaming from an unimpressive performance last week against Portland. So you can expect Los Angeles to put the clamps down on the Goats early and often. No goals or assists for Chivas USA on Sunday.
4. A goal and an assist for Robbie Keane
Assuming that Robbie Keane does not get reprimanded for chewing the officials out late at JELD-WEN Field and is forced to sit this one out, the Irishman will be able to run rings around the young guns of the Goats. Chalk up a goal and an assist for Keano.
5. At least four saves from Dan Kennedy
Goalkeeper Dan Kennedy has had a tough season, but he will need to shake it off and get going with a big game. Look for Kennedy to make at least four saves for Chivas USA.
6. Landon Donovan with the brace
Landon Donovan is known in some circles as “The Chiva-killer” simply because of his success scoring on Chivas USA. Watch for Donovan to deliver on Sunday with a couple of goals to make things interesting for the Galaxy.
7. Marcelo Sarvas with two assists
Marcelo Sarvas has been one of the more reliable players in the midfield for the Galaxy, with six assists this season. Against Chivas USA, expect Sarvas to go full-stop with a couple of assists.
8. Gyasi Zardes will score
Despite a tough season for Gyasi Zardes, he leads the team in shots with 68. Sooner or later, one of them has to go it. Zardes will deliver in the second half for LA.
9. Jaime Penedo with at least four saves
With Chivas USA playing for pride, they will throw everything at Jaime Penedo, and he will put on a clinic. At least four saves will be made from Jimmy P on Sunday against the Goats.
10. Los Angeles wins in a walkover
The Los Angeles Galaxy should be able to walk past Chivas USA and take the three points. Of course, since this is a Bold Prediction, that’s easier said than done for this struggling Galaxy team…
