The month of September began modestly for Gio Savarese’s New York Cosmos, who traveled to Clarke Stadium in Edmonton, Alb. to face Colin Miller’s FC Edmonton. The end result was a 1-1 draw that saw both teams trade goals.

Chris Nurse opened the scoring for the Eddies in the 60th minute of play thanks to Neil Hlavaty but New York’s Marcos Senna scored a penalty in the 79th minute after Edmonton’s Albert Watson committed a handball in the penalty box.

“It’s a disappointing result for us because we were at home and I think we were the better team on the day,” Nurse told reporters following the match. “One lapse in concentration cost us. We just need to be a little more clinical in the final third and stay switched on throughout the game.”

“I thought defensively as a whole it was one of our best performances,” said Cosmos defender Hunter Freeman to NYCosmos.com. “[The goal] kind of woke us up a little bit. We’re not totally disappointed I think but we are a little bit that we didn’t get the three points.”

New York return to action on Sept. 7 to host the Atlanta Silverbacks at Shuart Stadium on the campus of Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be televised by SNY and One World Sports.
