Bruce Arena’s Los Angeles Galaxy scratched and clawed their way to a 1-0 shutout victory over Martin Rennie’s Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, B.C. The victory places the Galaxy in second in the MLS Western Conference for the time being, with a record of 12-9-4 (40 points).
Here are the player ratings for the Los Angeles Galaxy against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Since the match did not have any Opta Chalkboard information, the ratings are instead given by group.
Jaime Penedo 9
Man of the match. Big stop in the 81st minute sealed the deal for the Galaxy. Distribution was dubious, but it didn’t take away from a performance that defines his quality. Can you imagine how the Galaxy could have performed had Penedo been the goalkeeper from the start of the season? Carlo who?
Omar Gonzalez 7
Todd Dunivant 7
A.J. DeLaGarza 7
This was a more inspired performance from the Galaxy back line this year. A much better effort than the previous meeting. It also helps when you have a goalkeeper that blew Carlo Cudicini out of the water tonight.
Gyasi Zardes 6
Marcelo Sarvas 7.5
Hector Jimenez 5
Sean Franklin 5.5
A controlled performance from the midfield, and Sarvas get a bonus for a few more looks on goal. Good distribution, but this was an evenly-matched game with Vancouver doing a little bit more with distribution and passing. The hope was that Franklin’s substitution would add a little more depth to the midfield for the tiring Jimenez, but it was a change the Caps could manage.
Robbie Keane 6
Landon Donovan 8
Donovan’s goal in the third minute is the reason why his rating is a little bit higher. Keane, however, struggled to find his rhythm and was off on his shooting. The interesting thing about this contest was that the Galaxy did not commit a single offsides, nor committed a handball, the latter being a major sticking point for the Vancouver faithful.
