This is Los Angeles Galaxy football, the way it should be done. Precise passing, superb possession, intense ball pressure, and thorough stat domination leading to goals and a trio of points per contest.
For Bruce Arena’s Galaxy, they finally put it all together and shut out Schellas Hyndman’s FC Dallas, 2-1, at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
The victory sees Los Angeles improve to 9-7-3 on the year and make the race in the MLS Western Conference even more tight. Here are the player ratings for the Los Angeles Galaxy against FC Dallas on the View from Avalon.
Carlo Cudicini 7
Well, this is strange. Carlo Cudicini can actually pitch a shutout. Embattled goalkeepers can really do that? It must be that “back-against-the-wall” mentality, I tells ya. Cudicini will be on the rebound if he can make this a habit.
Todd Dunivant 7
Six recoveries, four clearances, a key pass and an 80 percent pass success rate. Clean performance from the Iron Man.
A.J. DeLaGarza 7.5
10 recoveries, four clearances and a 90 percent pass success rate. Gets a deduction for conceding three corners.
Omar Gonzalez 7
Eight recoveries, six clearances, a key pass and a 85 percent pass success rate. His height and extension has been an asset to LA.
Sean Franklin 7.5
Seven recoveries, four interceptions, two key passes, a 60 percent cross success rate and an 85 percent pass success rate.
Hector Jimenez 8
This was a breakthrough performance from Hector Jimenez, who iced the match in the 80th minute of play. Despite a 70 percent pass success rate and a 25 percent cross success rate, Jimenez had three interceptions, four recoveries, two clearances and won a couple of tackles.
In the last several matches, Jimenez has been in the right spots to get a good look on goal, and that’s what you need from your depth.
Robbie Rogers 7
Five recoveries, two tackles won, but a 17 percent cross success rate despite a 84 percent pass success rate. Rogers did earn an assist, and he earns a bonus for that. Get used to seeing him in the assists column on MLSSoccer.com.
Juninho gets a .5 deduction for arguing with Ricardo Salazar along with a 33 percent cross success rate, but he did have nine recoveries, four tackles won, three clearances, three key passes and a 78 percent pass success rate. The corners need to be on the money when Landon Donovan isn’t in town…
Marcelo Sarvas 8.5
Sarvas gets a bonus for his celebration, but he also had nine recoveries and an 85 percent pass success rate. When he gets on a hotstreak with his finishing, the Galaxy’s chances of winning increase.
Robbie Keane 9
More on this in the next piece.
Gyasi Zardes 5
To his credit, Gyasi Zardes did force Raul Fernandez to make some point-blank saves. But once his masters his finishing touch and eludes competent netminders like Fernandez, he will be on his way. That’s all there is to it.
Colin Clark 4
Brought in for fresh legs and nothing else. Did fancy a chance to score late in the match.
Pablo Mastroeni NR
Rafael Garcia NR
Came into the game late, no rating given.
