2013 USL Pro Power Rankings: Week 3

As we get set to close the books on April in USL Pro, Orlando City retain the top spot in the View from Avalon’s USL Pro Power Rankings. Meanwhile, the Wilmington Hammerheads take a massive tumble after faltering on the road this weekend. All this and more on the USL Pro Power Rankings, here on the View from Avalon.

1. Orlando City

Adrian Heath’s Orlando City were on point this past week with four points out of a possible six. Dom Dwyer scored for the Lions in the eight minute but they were consigned to a 1-1 draw with the Charlotte Eagles on Apr. 23 at Queens University Stadium. On Apr. 27, they put it all together in a 4-0 shutout win over the Dayton Dutch Lions at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla. A Dom Dwyer brace (33′, 72′) combined with goals from Dennis Chin (27′) and Jamie Watson (39′) sealed all three points for Orlando, who continue their season on Apr. 30 at the Citrus Bowl against VSI Tampa Bay. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. On May 4, Orlando hosts Antigua Barracuda FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.

2. Harrisburg City Islanders

Bill Becher’s Harrisburg City Islanders destroyed the Rochester Rhinos, 5-1, at the Skyline Sports Complex in Harrisburg, Pa. on Apr. 27. A Lucky Mkosana brace (75′, 90′) to go with goals from Jimmy McGlaughlin (31′), Yann Ekra (66′) and Sainey Touray (80′) paced the City Islanders, who have a couple of matches this week. On May 1, they host the Charleston Battery. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. On May 4, Harrisburg travel to Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, N.Y. to clash with the Rhinos once again. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET.

3. Charleston Battery

A Mike Azira brace (24′, 61′) gave Michael Anhaeuser’s Charleston Battery a 2-0 shutout win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Apr. 27 at Blackbaud Stadium. Charleston have a couple of matches on the ledger this week. On May 1, they face the Harrisburgh City Islanders at the Skyline Sports Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. 5. Los Angeles Blues

Jesus Rico-Sanz’s Los Angeles Blues were in need on a big win after dropping two straight on the road and on the trot. They got in in the form of a 4-0 shutout over a Wilmington Hammerheads team that had to play down to 10 men at Titan Stadium on the campus of California State University, Fullerton in Fullerton, Calif. on Apr. 26. Goals from Shay Spitz (5′), Mershad Momeni (16′), Chris Cortez (81′) and Juan Perez-Bernal (84′) paced the Blues, who will continue their home stand on May 5 against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET.

6. Charlotte Eagles

A late 90th-minute goal from Nate Thornton salvaged a 1-1 draw between Mark Steffens’s Charlotte Eagles and Orlando City at Queens University Stadium on Apr. 23. The Eagles rebounded on Apr. 26 with a 2-0 shutout win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at home. Goals from Christian Ramirez (3′) and Christian Meza (54′) paced Charlotte, who travel to City Stadium on May 4 to take on the Richmond Kickers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

7. Phoenix FC Wolves

An own goal from Uriah Bentick (6′) to go with goals from Netinho (34′) and Diego Faria (83′) were enough for David Robertson’s Phoenix FC Wolves to close the door on the Wilmington Hammerheads, 3-1, at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz. on Apr. 28. Phoenix will host the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on May 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PT/10:30 p.m. ET.

8. Dayton Dutch Lions

A goal from Brandon Swartzendruber gave Ivar van Dinteren’s Dayton Dutch Lions a massive 1-0 shutout win over VSI Tampa Bay at Plant City Stadium in Plant City, Fla. on Apr. 26. Dayton will look to be a bit more consistent on May 3, when they host the Charleston Battery at Beavercreek High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

9. VSI Tampa Bay

Matt Weston’s VSI Tampa Bay dropped a 1-0 result to the Dayton Dutch Lions on Apr. 26 at Plant City Stadium and will hope to rebound on May 3, when they host Antigua Barracuda FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.

The road trip continues on May 5, when Pittsburgh faces the Los Angeles Blues at Titan Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.

Things can’t get any worse for Jesse Myers’s Rochester Rhinos, who only have a 62nd-minute goal from Bilal Duckett to show for in their 5-1 blowout defeat to the Harrisburg City Islanders on Apr. 27 at the Skyline Sports Complex. Even worse, the Rhinos will have to deal with the City Islanders again, this time on May 4 at Sahlen’s Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET.
