It was an average showing from Bruce Arena’s Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday night against Martin Pareja’s Colorado Rapids, but it was enough as they shut out Colorado 1-0 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
No Omar Gonzalez? No Robbie Keane? No problem, although the young forward tandem of Jose Villareal and Jack McBean were hindered by Rapids goalkeeper Clint Irwin all night. Let’s take a look at the player ratings for the Los Angeles Galaxy against the Colorado Rapids.
Carlo Cudicini 6.5
Made three saves but only managed a 63 percent pass success rate, according to the Opta Chalkboard. Not a lot of work needed to be done on Saturday night from Cudicini.
Sean Franklin 7
Strong outing from Franklin, who earned a 79 percent pass success rate, a through ball, two key passes, five interceptions, three clearances, three recoveries and five tackles won. He did conceded a couple of corner and two unsuccessful crosses and he’s penalized for that. Otherwise, this was a good showing.
A.J. DeLaGarza 7.5
DeLeGarza earned an 85 percent pass success rate to go with two headers, three interceptions, six clearances and four recoveries. A very strong showing from A.J. in central defense.
Todd Dunivant 8
Good performance from the Iron Man, who donned the captain’s armband on Saturday night. He also had an 85 percent pass success ranted and added two successful crosses, two key passes, a tackle won, two interceptions, seven clearances and three recoveries. Not often do fans see Dunivant, a Colorado native, don the armband so this was a treat to watch.
Very efficient pass success rate (89 percent), and Leonardo added two tackles won, six interceptions, eight clerances and four recoveries. Workmanlike display.
Colin Clark 6
77 percent pass success rate, a couple of successful flick ons, four recoveries…and four unsuccessful crosses. Clark was trying a little too much to help the cause, but a player like him should know that he’s only making it worse if it doesn’t pay off in the end.
Mike Magee 7
Responsible for the game-winning penalty kick in the 50th minute. Magee earned a 74 percent pass success rate to go with three key passes, eight lay offs and five recoveries.
Man of the match. The field general for the Galaxy gets a .5 deduction for his six unsuccessful crosses, but otherwise, he dominated the midfield, with an 83 percent pass success rate, 86 successful passes, two lay offs, five headers, four successful crosses, four key passes, eight interceptions, nine recoveries, and a clearance. Worth the price of admission, if you ask me.
Marcelo Sarvas 8
Also of note was Marcelo Sarvas, who loses out to Juninho because of his handball that led to a yellow in the second half. Sarvas did his part to command the midfield, with an 86 percent pass success rate; two through balls; four lay offs, tackles won and key passes each; an interception and 11 recoveries. Sarvas was a recovery machine on Saturday against an outclassed Colorado side that were lucky to only finish a man down and a down and not worse.
Jack McBean 6
McBean just couldn’t buy a goal against Clint Irwin on Saturday, but did show signs of potention. He also had a 77 percent pass success rate, three headers, two clearances and two recoveries.
Jose Villareal 5
Like McBean, Jose Villareal couldn’t find his scoring mojo on Saturday against the Rapids. Villareal also took a knock in the first half and had to be subbed midway through the second half.
Michael Stephens 5
Stephens gets a bonus for a high pass success rate (93 percent), to go with a through ball, and a successful cross. The touch is still a work a progress.
Hector Jimenez 4
82 percent pass success rate, a key pass and three recoveries, but not anything else from Jimenez.
Rafael Garcia NR
Came into the game late, no rating given.
