I did find the playing out of poistion complaint questionable as Beckham was also roundly criticized for “hanging out on the right” and not doing anything when his team was in trouble, or for not tracking back to defend enough. A lot of people blamed Gullit for making him stick there when the rest of the team couldn’t get the ball to him once the opposition realized what an easy fix it was to shut down service by isolating him out there. I’m not a coach, but there are certainly two sides to that argument. And it didn’t take either Donovan or Wahl to tell how frustrated Beckham (and Donovan) looked, whatever else in the book is or is not true.On another note, I agree with the commenter/player above who talked about what goes on in dressing rooms. I particularly doubt that anyone who was brought up in Alex Ferguson’s dressing room got into the habit of questioning the manager–ever, let alone in front of another player.Whatever the details, it all sounds like a nasty business, with big money–way bigger than Beckham’s pay packet–as usual at the root.
